Colin Is in Good Company

This week’s spotlight is now sharing close quarters with some of the world’s most recognizable arts works, such as Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”. Starting on October 1, 2017 Colin Kaepernick`s number 7 red San Francisco 49ners jersey is hanging in New York`s Museum of Modern Art in the "Items: Is Modern Fashion?" exhibition.

MoMA curator Paola Antonelli shares her reasoning behind this new addition, “Children around the world look up to sports heroes as role models; for them, the jersey embodies a dream or aspiration.” In 2016 Kaepernick took a stance on the racial injustice in America by sitting down during the national anthem.

Kaepernick used his platform for those who feel as if they don’t have a voice and has been sending shockwaves around the country, and the world. This jersey hanging in such a prestigious venue represents an appreciation of courage, empathy, and utter bravery.

I hope the symbolism of his jersey resonates to children, adults, and everything in between. Congratulations to Colin Kaepernick and let it be known that it is ok to have a voice, be brave and use it.
